Default 4/23/05 9 mile bank

I hooked up with Slayer and his partner in the boat for some chicken fishing friday night. We preped the boat and talked with some other boaters to get some updated info on the fish.
We left SI around 5:00am and loaded a scoop of dines in the tank and set the GPS for the 302. We stopped on a couple paddys on the way but no one was home. On the third one we got hit on a couple baits. The first pulled the hook and mine came to gaff. A nice 9lb bonito. We kept on moving looking for the temp breaks but the front that moved in friday pushed the 60 degree water to the south leaving us with temps in the high 58 degree range. Knowing the chickens are now gone we start a troll for the coast & 9 mile bank hoping for some more paddys or a jig strike. We found some paddys but when we pulled up on one we found out the backup battery for the bait pump was dead and the connection to the alt. was bad. So now all we had was trolling gear and a scoop of dead bait. Since it was past noon we called it a day as the weather was starting to turn snotty on us. It was good to just get out on the water and not be at work. Maybe next time it'll be our day.

Congrats on the good Trip... Sry for the boat trouble that you had!!! It will be always better chance next time on the Alblie. I believe you have to search the water with higher Temp. Most the ablies been caught at between 61-62F water for sure!

Thanks for the report!

oubearjinx, we were looking for that 60 degree water. It was our misfortune that the cold front blew over the area the night before. Thursday the water there was 59.9 to 60.2 We were going to play hooky and run thursday but figured it would still be good saturday. If our third would have shown friday night like the plan was we were going to trailer to ensenada and go from there. Next time that is our plan. It was still a good day.

Mokahehteh, my friend gaffed it for me. That thing made 4 long runs on me before it finally got tired. The fish was gut hooked so if I tried to bounce it the hook would have come out. As it was it popped loose when she hit the deck. We thought the bloody look made the photo anyway.

I wanted to get it myself but we were on a 25' bayliner and the swells were tossing us. I probally would've been swimming with it if I tried. I forgot what it's like being on a small boat offshore. You really have to watch your balance around the rail.
It also didn't help that I forgot to check my drag setting. I had it set too light so when I lifted the rod she got some line for free.
