Default Rpt-Weds 3-9-05 Catalina Tails, Short WSB.

First time fishing with Andrew on his Brand New Deluxe 29' Striper with Twin Volvo Penta Diesels, also fishing with friend Ming. We left his slip in the LB Marina at 8pm, Tuesday night. Stopped at Nachos to buy some squid, none available, but Bill's Bait on the San Pedro side had squid, one scoop $60, they scraped the bottom to get us a scoop. The squid was very lively throughout the day. We arrived at the East end of Catalina by 10pm, where we passed a few seiners, but no light boats near Silver Canyon, or the Salsa Verde area. We metered squid and put out the lights until after midnight with no results, and anchored up in 80' of water near Salsa Verde to spend the night.

We awake at 5:45 am, and head into the beach at China Point, Orange Rocks, Salsa Verde, then Ben Westin, all for one short WSB about 20". We saw boats coming from the Vee's, Binacles, and Church Rock and decided to go to the West End, rather than head east. As we crossed Cat Harbor , and rounded the point, we spotted a few sport boats and decided to check it out. Heard a few screams and hollers, and saw some tails boiling in the distance. We set up anchor, and it wasn't long before my squid was inhaled by a nice Yellowtail about 14 lbs.

Here is my first Yellowtail of 2005.

I hooked and landed another smaller Yellowtail, then Ming got into the action and caught a dandy tail.

About an hour later I hooked and landed my third, also about 14 lbs. Then Ming landed his second.

The cooler's getting full.

Andrew caught this nice 3.5 lb. Calico, and shortly thereafter I landed this big'n, too bad it was a bleeder.

I hooked a fourth, only it broke off, line appeared to have a bad spot in it. Finally Andrew drops down to light tackle, and hooks a big tail, and while fighting it, the tail wraps itself around the anchor line. Never fear, the crew of the mighty vessel jumped into action, raising the anchor, and on our bellies, unwrapped the tangled line, saving the tired Yellowtail. Andrew and Ming tied for the jackpot fish with equal 16.5 lb. tails. Here is Andrews big'n.

And the catch of the day.

Called it a day at 3pm and had a happy ride home.No white seabass again, darn, but a very pleasant day on the water, finding some winter Yellowtail on the chew, and adding two new fishing buddies to my memories, Andrew & Ming. Thanks so much for the invite Andrew, loved your boat, very comfortable and well equipped. We'll get the elusive WSB next time. Cory
