Default NOAA gillnet proposal

Pacific Coast ? Comments Invited on Proposed Permit for Drift Gillnet Fishery off California and Oregon

NOAA Fisheries is proposing to issue a permit to authorize the unintentional taking of three stocks of threatened or endangered marine mammals by the California/Oregon drift gillnet large mesh fishery.

The affected stocks are the CA/OR/WA stock of fin whales, the Eastern North Pacific stock of humpback whales, and the CA/OR/WA stock of sperm whales.

NOAA Fisheries has evaluated the best available information and determined that the estimated mortality and serious injury caused by the drift gillnet fishery would have a negligible impact on these three stocks of marine mammals.

A recovery plan for each of these stocks has been developed or is being developed. In addition, a take reduction plan and monitoring program have been implemented for the CA/OR drift gillnet fishery.

NOAA Fisheries is seeking public comment on this proposed permit. All comments must be received by August 28. Comments may be sent to [email protected] For more information, read the notice or contact [email protected]
