Default Big Bear Lake Fishing Report 9/6

Big Bear Lake Fishing Report

Wednesday, September 6, 2006 10:35 AM PDT

Rainbow trout fishing was good this past week. Oxygen levels extend down to 46 feet at the dam, and 36 feet at Papoose Bay.

The western one-third of the lake has produced the most trout. With additional boaters on the lake during the holiday weekend the bite fell off a bit. Anglers should expect fishing to rebound by the weekend.

Trolling: Use lead core line at three colors. Needlefish and Buoyants are the most productive way to get in on the bite. Water clarity is down to five feet because of the algae bloom and the color is a medium green. Brass and copper colored lures are working best for trout.

CD Rapalas fished from mono, as well as, flashers with a crawler in tow should land fish.

Bait fishing: Anglers are advised to drift fish the middle of the lake with a slip bobber rigged at 15 to 20 feet with Nitro and night crawlers soaked in scented attractants.

Pan fish continue to be active around weed beds and structures. Fishing with mini-jigs, and mealworms should produce results. Catfishing remains along the east end and North Shore of the lake soaking stink baits, mackerel, shrimp and chicken livers on the bottom.

Information provided by Alan Sharp of Big Bear Marina, and by Big Bear Lake Municipal Water District.
