Question Hunting Catalina

Hello All,

By way of introduction I'm danimal. Moved to Colorado a number of years ago so I've out of the water for some time. Used to dive the Channels a few times a year. I'm headed to Catalina on Sept. 15th for some spearfishing action. I've promised a multiple person fish dinner on Sunday so I'm figuring Rockfish? The WSB and YT seem to be hit and miss and I'm needing to hit. Can anyone give me an idea of what to expect? Should I pack up the gun or just go with the sling? As I said, been out of the water for some time and don't know what the fishery is like now.

Any help would be most appreciated!

Welcome aboard Danimal

WIll you be diving off a boat or from shore?

I would bring a speargun since there is still yellows and wsb around

The weather has been great so you should have a nice trip

Default Thanks!

Hey Roger,

I'm going off a boat. I imagine it will probably be hitting the kelp beds. I read on the postings the WSB do hang out in the kelp. Is this correct? The YT's are open water though, aren't they? Are there still any lings, calico or cabezon around?

I really appreciate you getting back to me and the welcomes!

If you go around the backside eastend of Catalina you have a chance for wsb and yellows near the kelp..

Usually lings and cabs hang out deeper and there is always calicos in the kelps around the island
